Design With Squares
What’s your favorite shape? Don’t know? Yeah, me neither. There are lots of fun shapes in this world, both geometric and more organic shapes. I don’t think I have a favorite shape. I think it changes day by day, based on my mood, what I see, and what I am creating.
I have discovered a few things about shapes recently. The hardest shapes for me to cut free hand are circles. I definitely need a die cutting machine for that.
I think squares and rectangles are the easiest to cut and play with. The only tool you need to cut a precise square or rectangle is a paper trimmer. Maybe you have enough fine motor precision to be able to draw a straight line with a straight edge and then cut exactly along that line with scissors. I do not. If I want straight lines, I had better use a paper trimmer. 🙂
But, once you have your squares or rectangles you can get creative with your design. Overlap them or not . . . Use different colors and patterns . . .Turn them at an angle . . .etc.
What is your favorite shape?
When I was inspired by this week’s Tic Tac Toe Challenge to make a card with squares, I decided to go all out with the square design. I created a 4″ square card with 1″ squares of a lot of the patterns from the He’s the Man Designer Series Paper. I decided to make the focal point a 2 1/2″ square turned an an angle and even used the die from the All That Dies with lots of different square elements.
I even used a square turned at an angle to create a diamond shape for the inside of the card as well.
