Take Care of Yourself

How do you take care of yourself when you spend all your time and energy taking care of everyone else?

How Do You Know You Need to Take Care of Yourself

Do you find yourself always trying to do everything for everyone and you can’t even find time to shower?

Do you run yourself so ragged trying to pick up after everyone else that you can’t even spend quality time with them in the evening because you can’t keep your eyes open?

Do you find yourself irritated and beginning to snap at those you are trying to take care of?

Do you find yourself beginning to feel taken for granted? Feeling like everyone just assumes you’ll take care of them, but no one takes care of you?

Do you sometimes feel like you don’t even have enough energy to take care of yourself, let alone anyone else?

Make Time to Take Care of Yourself

Please don’t hear what I am NOT saying. I am not saying put yourself first. I am not saying you’re entitled to have others around you take care of you. I am not saying to stop taking care of or giving to others.

What I am saying is don’t run yourself ragged taking care of others and forget your own need as well. I am saying that in order to have the ability to continue being good and kind and generous, you must pay attention and care for your own needs as well.

When your electronic devices have a low battery–you plug them in. You take the time to give them more charge. If you’re planning ahead, you might even charge them before the battery dies, so they can always be used.

Why don’t we do the same with ourselves?

Charge Ourselves

How do you take care of or recharge yourself?

I’ve had it explained to me that with my traumatic brain injury it’s like my battery is only ever half full. That means it needs recharged more often and sooner than others around me. It’s not laziness if I need a nap in the afternoon and still need to go to bed earlier in the evening. It’s me recharging my battery so I will be better able to take care of others or stay pleasant ALL day.

Here are some ways I recharge:

  • Feed my soul several times throughout the day–by prayer, devotional reading, Bible study etc.
  • Eat good, healthy, yummy food in small portions several times throughout the day
  • Make sure I have good, healthy, yummy food easily available that doesn’t take a lot of prep time
  • Plan ahead and write it down so when I can’t think clearly it’s already there in black and white
  • Sit in the sun
  • Cuddle with my fur babies
  • Take naps
  • Read for fun–not to learn something
  • Listen to good music
  • Create

Card Details

Card details showing close up of embossed image with vellum, rhinestone, and pearls over it.

I used heat embossing on this card. I embossed the image of the girl with her book, blanket, and puppy directly on the Starry Sky cardstock using white embossing powder. Then, I colored in parts of the image with a white watercolor pencil.

Next, one of the new Stampin’ Up! Lovely Layers Vellum was added on top. Finally, rhinestones and pearls were added on top of that.

Inside of card say, "Sometimes the most productive thing you can do is relax."

A heat embossed sentiment circle is on the front of the card to thank them for being good to others and remind them to be good to themselves. The inside of the card reminds you that relaxing can be productive.

Did you hear that?
Relaxing does not mean you’re lazy. It means you’re recharging your battery.
