10 Lessons I Learned from Call of the Wild

My son and I watched Call of the Wild this weekend. While I expected to be entertained and enjoy the movie, I didn’t expect to leave with life lessons learned and inspiration for a card design.

Here are some of the lessons I learned from the 2020 movie adaptation of Jack London’s Call of the Wild

  1. Kindness creates connection.
  2. An unexpected change in circumstances doesn’t mean your life is over–just different.
  3. Obedience created by fear is not the same as obedience because of love and respect.
  4. Pay attention to those more experienced with your new normal.
  5. Adapt to your current situation.
  6. But, never change who you are.
  7. Take care of those around you.
  8. Never stop being adventurous.
  9. Find and appreciate beauty.
  10. Never give up.

And, now the inspired card design.

This dog from the Happy Tails stamp set has always reminded me of my sweet dog. In fact, I was at OnStage with my service dog when it was first introduced and I have called it Clifford’s stamp since it’s introduction. Now, it represents Buck as well. And, it can represent your sweet baby (dog) as well. Dogs are loyal–that is a true fact and picture so well in the movie. Plus, the dog who plays Buck came from Kansas, so that created another instant connection for me as well.

I must warn you. If you have read (and enjoyed) the novel by Jack London, your response to the movie may be the same as my sons: “It was not like the book. They left out a lot and changed some stuff.”

I personally have not read the book and really enjoyed the movie. My son, on the other hand, has read the book SIX times and was pretty focused on the differences in the movie adaptation. So, make an informed choice for yourself knowing the movie adaptation has differences from the original novel.

Make sure you check out the challenges to see the inspiration cards by the design teams and other creative entries.
