Celebrate the Red, White, and Blue

It is July 1 and here in the USA we are getting ready to celebrate Independence Day this week. Really, the celebrating has already started. I hear fireworks going off all around me. When it’s not raining, people are enjoying the outside and we’re enjoying grilling our dinners. Flags are flying and people are enjoying the outside and summer weather. (when it’s not raining of course).

It has put me in a patriotic and celebratory mood, so naturally I wanted to take that to my cards. This is another non-traditional representation of the American flag. The colors are red, white, and blue and it does have stars. I’m not sure you can really say the stripes are represented, but art isn’t always meant to be a literal interpretation anyway.

I struggled with figuring out where to place the sentiment. I stamped it in Night of Navy on the red cardstock under the rectangle of DSP, but it just didn’t sit right with me when I looked at it. I didn’t want to add an additional layer to the DSP for the sentiment, but that DSP is so dark I wasn’t sure it would work to stamp directly onto it. Finally, I did try to stamp the sentiment directly on the DSP in Tuxedo Black Momento Ink. And, I liked it. It is dark and kind of subtly blends into the background. It doesn’t jump out at you like a white sentiment label might. It just fades into the background and lets the stars shine and take center stage.

In fact, it’s almost like a secret message that not everyone might notice. 🙂

What do you think? A subtle dark sentiment or something much more noticeable? Which would you choose?

  1. What a great patriotic-inspired card Angel; I love the diecut detail on your main star and whilst I might have gone with an embossed white sentiment, I think yours works too. It can be tricky when the sentiment is on a panel like this! Thanks for sharing with us over at The Paper Players this week! (P.S. there is a typo in your post that you might want to correct ;-))

    1. Thanks Joanne. I did consider heat embossing the sentiment, but I decided I kind of like the subtlety of the dark sentiment. Thanks for the heads up on the typo. It is now fixed. 🙂
