Good-bye Arwen

This has been a rough weekend. My six year old dog, Arwen was acting like herself through Friday night. .She was being a bit finicky about her food, but that wasn’t completely unusual. When I got home from my Saturday conference, my son said he was worried about her. She wasn’t acting like herself and wasn’t eating. Then she threw up a couple of times that night. We had called our vet and let them know what was going on and scheduled an appointment for Monday morning.

Sunday came and she wasn’t acting any better. In fact she was getting worse by the minute. She threw up again and we saw blood in this one, so we planned a trip to urgent care for pets as soon as they opened Sunday afternoon. By the time they opened and we got in to see them, she was only able to walk a few steps before needing to lie down, wasn’t being her usual protective self, and still had eaten nothing (not even meat from my husband’s sandwich he offered her).

Lots of tests later, we still had no answers. Well, we knew what it wasn’t. There was nothing visible in her x-ray that would explain stomach issues. She hadn’t eaten some non food item that was messing with her system. She did not have an infection. She did have internal bleeding somewhere, but we couldn’t identify the reason or source. Some of her other blood panel numbers were off, but still no answers. So, we took her home for the night, kept an eye on her, and planned to see our vet this morning.

We were pretty sure when we headed to the vet this morning that she would need to be euthanized, so we were as prepared as you can be for that sort of thing. But, Arwen was in control of things to the very end. A few minutes after arriving at the vet, she took her last breath and died on her own terms.

We are sad and will miss her very much.

So, I came home and did what I do during moments of trauma–I made a card. I made a sympathy card. I used the fox stamp from the Nature’s Beauty stamp set because I thought it’s shape looked the most like Arwen of any stamps I had. That stamp set is retiring at the end of the 2021-2022 Annual Catalog and is already sold out.

Good-bye Arwen! We will always love you!

  1. So sorry for the loss of your sweet baby. My heart and prayers are with you and your family. She’s over the rainbow bridge now, having a great time and feeling fantastic. Your card is such a sweet tribute to her. Art is therapy, it gets you out of head and working with your hands and helps heal the heart. Thanks for joining us at CC&S for this challenge, hope it helped your heart just a little.
